I have a 1999 Johnson 130hp "ocean pro" two cycle outboard. It smokes excessively (large cloud) for the 1st minute after I start it and then stops. Other than that, motor runs fine. Any suggestions?....Thanks...steve

Re: smoking

Are you saying it is smoking more than before? Did you just aquire it, 2 strokes do smoke quite a bit. You could try the full synthetic "Smokeless" oil , it does seem to cut it down a bit.

Re: smoking

I've had the motor 4 years and its geetting worse on startup. I'm talking a 10 foot cloud for about a minute and then it goes away and runs fine. It's like oil is accumulating after I shut down the motor for the night and next morning it burns all that oil out.

Re: smoking

Steve, I have a 1999, 90 HP Johnson with the same symptoms. I was told it was the oil left in the carb and system after setting idle for a period of time. I was told to disconnect and do away with the automatic oil system. Start with a full tank of fuel and add the correct amount of oil directly to the fuel tank as you would normally premix fuel and oil. I was also told I would not believe how much easy the motor starts. I have not had a chance to do this but it sounds practical. I would also like to hear from others on this idea.

Mine runs the premix gas.Its smokes like crazy when its first started. The rest of the day its fine.Just the nature of a 2 stroke.
Running synthetic oil really helps. The Pennzoil part synthetic helps and its sold every where.

Re: smoking

Decarb it. See "decarb" in the engine FAQ's. It won't stop all the smoke but it will help considerably.

Don't disconnect the oil injection. That is not the culprit.

Re: smoking

How about the oil inlet check valve in the VRO pump. Could that be the culprit?
