smooth shift

i have a 115 hp mercury inline 6 when i shift it in gear it makes a grinding sound but then it goes on and shifts into gear.also once into gear and pushing lever forward it starts to make a knocking sound. it acts like something is slipping.by the way its a 74 model.any one ever had this problem.

Hey bomber....one question for ya'. How are you shifting? Are you shifting slow or "snapping" it into gear? If yer shifting slow, that's why you hear the "grinding" which is the clutch and gear dogs bouncing off each other. "Snap" it in and see what happens.

thanks for the reply. ill try snapping it. still have ? about knocking sound when advancing throttle.

big bad bomber<br /><br />the knocking sound COULD be the engine jumping in and out of gear this is due to slow or improper shifting and now the clutch dog in the gear case could very well be worn you should take it to a shop and from now on shift the way outboard jim tells you!
