I have a '78 Grady White W/A, just bought it last year. The bottom has many coats of paint on it and there are spots where the paint is chipped away down to the fiberglass. Is there a product to "smooth-out" these spots before I put a fresh coat of paint on her? I am looking for something like joint compound you use on drywall.....but for boats!... :)

Marine Tex putty, in white or gray. Great stuff.

All you have to do is sand it smooth to feather the edges of the chips with 80 grit sandpaper, clean it and you'll be fine. You don't have to fill the chipped areas.

How much of an improvement (if any at all) could I expect to see if I "smooth-out" these areas by either of the above mentioned methods?

Meant to say improvement in performance. Seems like a ton of work to strip it all...........
