Just for the record, the Y pipe on an 888 stern drive has 5 bolts, including two way down on the bottom that you can't see when they're buried in 30 years of grease and dirt. If you undo the top three bolts, however, the Y pipe will come off when tugged with a small snapping sound when the metal attached to the lower bolts breaks off.

Argh. Anyone know if there's a way to repair those "ears" or do I need a new Y pipe center? Can I even get one for a drive this old? It looks like the "ears" are meant to seal the lower part of the joint, below two small holes for something, water maybe?

I also sheared the lowest starboard bolt on the transom itself getting the assembly off... it's one of the ones with the hemisphere shaped cap on top. Can I replace these with standard grade 8 bolts? The other side is corroded to half its normal diameter too.

On the bright side, I got everything off the transom, so now I can move on to screwing up the transom itself...

You can't fix those ears.....
Look on ebay, 'y' pipes turn up now & then.....
Are you referring to the bolts that the sacrificial anodes are attached to?....
They are aluminum......
I would not use steel there, it won't last long......
What is it that you are trying to fix?......

Ayuh,.......
Possibly you could get those "Ears" Welded back On,.....
Or,.... Maybe find a replacement Connector pipe on ebay,......
Either Way,..... They Are Necessary to hold out the Water.....

The Lower Transom assembley Bolts are Aluminum Continuity bolts..... That's Why the Acorn Anodes are screwed onto the outside of them......
Get a couple of New 1s,...
DON'T substitue Steel bolts......

It may be cheaper now to install a block off plate where the "Y" pipe bolts to on the transom shield and do thru hull exhaust.

Ah, okay, sacrificial anodes. That makes sense, I'll just have to get some new ones. I'm pretty sure the old bolts weren't aluminum, but maybe they were just real old.

I can't weld the "ears" since the center of the Y pipe was sintered metal (pot metal). I was thinking maybe I could braze them or similar, or even try a fix with epoxy putty like fasteel. I'm going to experiment with this some. Given that it's sintered metal it can't be subject to a lot of stress in use.

I'll try to watch ebay for Y pipes too... this style is specific to this outdrive, so I have to get one for this exact outdrive. I'd be willing to buy a replacement pipe new if anyone can suggest a source.

Thanks,
Erik

ebay is my friend. Apparently it is now yours as well. That Y pipe you bought would have ended up in the recylce bin without ebay and you would have still been without one.

This may sound a little stupid but is the Y pipe a Volvo or Merc. I am throwing away the Y pipe on my Volvo 280
