So I have seen this thread a couple of times with no answers?

Here's my problem,
I have a Johnson 130 2 stroke, and when I took it out this last weekend the motor was working fine until about 1/2 way through the day. When I would put the boat into gear it would kill the motor. If I reved the boat out of gear and popped it back into gear it would work fine. At top speed it runs great. So it starts fine and idles fine but with a load on it, the motor dies. I have already put fresh fuel in the boat, bypassed the water seperator, flow scan, primer bulb, with new hoses and it still does the same thing. I only have one hose left to change. And that's the hose from the gas tank to the stern of the boat. By the way I just had a new fuel pump put in about 2 months ago. So anybody have any ideas?

Changing parts is the most used, most expensive and least effective troubleshooting method known to man.

Get out your Service Manual and do the linkage and synchronization procedure. Let us know what happens, and good luck. :)

If you are a fisherman & have possibly gotten a lot of monfilament Nylon line wrapped around the prop, you could have enough resistance on the prop shaft that the motor can not overcome this at the slow shifting RPM.

Yes, I am a fisherman, and thought about that already. I spun the prop the other day with little to no resistance.

you didn't say how old it is...

had this exact same problem with a 70hp awhile back. upon close inspection, I noticed that the ball & socket joint on the spark advance rod had deteriorated (after 31 years) to the point of crumbling into pieces. The rod was just loose in the hole, giving it enough slack to where it wouldn't advance the spark until the throttle was pretty well advanced. But not so much slack that it couldn't reach full spark advance so full throttle operation wasn't affected.

it's probably a longshot, but it if does happen to be the case, my advice is to go ahead and order a complete set of grommets, the others are not far behind...
