And I lived to tell the tale. So thankfully we didn't sink but time to open up the wallet. Question is i had a 1.84 on it and I found a 1.5 that I might replace it with. 5.0 on a 20ft deck boat. Would that work and what would be a good pitch to start with?

What pitch are you currently running?

You are going to have a very hard time with a 1.5 if you are running a 17 inch prop on a 1.84 and having any trouble at all getting on plane. The lowest prop made most times is a 15 and that isn't going to be low enough.

The boat came with a 21 and it was a big struggle. Went to a 19 and it improved, but with a full load of fuel it was still tough. Thank you for the input.

Go back to 1.84:1 and a 19" or 17" prop.

if you have a 5.0 with a 1.84:1 now and you are struggling, if you go to a 1.5:1 ratio, you need to also change the motor to a 6.2 or larger.

how big is this deck boat?

also, my guess is you are not pulling the drive every year for u-joint inspection

I had a thread earlier about it making a knocking sound. Thought it was u joint or gimbal bearing. Bearing felt good so replaced the u joint. Obviously something went wrong for it to catastrophicly fail like it did. Not sure if the engine was out of line or if I didn't put it together right. If I decide to repair it I'm getting all the proper tools. As for the boat it's a 94 hurricane deck boat 208 (20' 6").
