So what's wrong with the Merc TKS carbs?

Hey everyone,

I've heard some negative things about Merc's TKS carbs, and I was wondering why that is? They advertise it as a system that eliminates the need for a choke. How do the previous generation carbs handle that? Choke on the dash?

Thanks!

TKS is for the generations that grew up with fuel injection. ie cold starts don't require pumping the throttle. Pre-TKS carbs have automatic chokes. Either elec or stove type.

Biggest problem (Customer complaints) I found with them, is they don't always work as designed. As John mentioned, they were designed to start in neutral at idle without moving the throttle, this is how the younger generation starts their cars and trucks with EFI. Problem is, most of the time you still have to pump the throttle to get the engine started even with the TKS.
Next problem is idle speed. It's supposed to be 700-900 rpm with a cold engine. In reality, they idle between 800 and 1200 rpm for 6-10 minutes before it's warm enough for the engine to go into normal mode.
On older models with chokes, you could just adjust the choke and use your throttle lever, and go as soon as the engine stays running, shifting and close maneuvering the boat at 1000 rpm is not only hard on the drive shifting, but too fast for the boat in close quarters.
With the TKS, there is no adjustment, if it idles too fast, then you replace the module. ~$200
Then you have the complicated system involved in making it work, plus it being a Mercruiser ONLY carb.
Basically what you have is a complicated, expensive system that doesn't always work, designed so people don't have to learn how to use their throttle lever. Might just as well have bought fuel injection, it's a lot more common and easier to work on and keep working.

Thanks guys! I've read the Merc rags that point out the benefits, but was unsure of the detriments. Never heard of the problems though, but I've seen a bit of what you're talking about.

Before the boat was broken in, it would never start and run the first time; it would catch immediately and then proceed to die. Seems that lately it's been pretty good though, same thing but instead of dying it loses RPMs briefly, catches again and then runs fine. It stays below 800 RPMs unless I'm idling for more than a few minutes with a cold engine; if I put it in gear right away it never gets that high though.

When warming up on the muffs with the RPMs set at 1,200 I can tell when it gets up to temp because I lose 200 RPMs. Seems a bit strange to me, but so far nothing's been a problem for me yet.

How difficult is this to replace with a conventional carb should this one give me trouble?

Shouldn't be hard. When the time comes, should consider an intake/carb change to a 4brl. Gain some hp with the change to regular carb.
