Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

back on subject:
i have a 91' S-10 Blazer 4wd 4door with 200,000 miles onthe origional motor and tranny that keeps on going. i am a Ford guy from birth, but this thing keeps going. Easy to work on and plenty of power. i even towed my 20 foot camper with it for a season. As much as I hate to admit it, I like it. Being a Chevy, a lot of little things break, like the cruise lever button broke, then vacuum resivoir, fitting snapped off, I've replace three power window motors, one of my seatbelt latches broke, but the drivetrain is solid, Even the 4wd works as well as an open diff 4wd can.

Back off subject again:
ROSCOE, how are things in Medford, WI. I lived there between '83 to '87. Moved to Stetsonville from '85 to '87. Did you ever get another stoplight? :) Went to Medford high in '86 and '87. i moved to South Carolina after that. i love the beaches but miss the snowmobiling.

Bowfin

I am a long time ford fan too, but these little guys really get me, I like the look, the comfort level, everything

if I could swing the loot, a 97 explorer would be in my driveway, but explorers are hot compared to the blazer/ jimmy/ bravada

ah well, my old pi mpala is ready to roll, so Ill run her down the road a piece, but I am sick of the limitations of a car, ive been in trucks way too long

after two days to put a lousy u joint in, now the guy says his credit card machine is down, sheesh ... card rich, cash poor, 103.78 in cash to be exact, ah well ATM with its ripoff fees, here I come

never ends!

Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

Ray, I had 2 Bravadas - first was a '92. Never a bit of trouble. Good machine. Had a customer that buys 3 new cars a year, 2 for him and one for his wife. He buys an SUV in the fall and a sporty BMW, Mercedes, Caddy, or the like in the spring. Usually gives his "old" cars to his kids or someone close to him and trades in a 3 or 4 year old for the new one. Anyway, he did his own traction tests between the Bravada, Cherokee, Explorer, and Blazer. The Bravada won every one hands down.

Second Bravada was a '98. Good vehicle but it kept blowing the AWD fuse. Had to replace the computer control to fix that one. Warranty item. Don't have the Bravada any more, moved up to a Yukon when the family got bigger, but my cousin loves the Bravada now. Only real complaints - '92 ate front brakes. '98 ate tires.

Ill tell ya, the bravada is one nice rig, i guess what it really was, was the first luxo 4wd, i dont think the lexus and all those guys were out, I know mercedes has had its unimog out fer ever, but that is a spartan piece (tho now im sure theyve tricked it up)

heading to school today, I opened the ol girl up, (I havent really heard that four barrel moan in a while, love that sound!) took her well over a hundred, no shimmy, no vibration, just rocketed straight down the road (slight buffeting from those hellacious winds tho)

stopped to look at some rigs today, found a grand cherokee for five and change, 97 with 120k miles, too cramped

lovely red jimmy went for 9, too much loot tho

Ill just bide my time, wait for the right rig at the right price.

my cheapskate side keeps seeing these 1000 dollar 88's, and I know I can get a pep boys engine for 900, but I dont have time to pay attention, much less tackle a restoration - maybe one day I will, the 4.3 is a v-8 with 2 cylinders hacked off, an LT - 1 slightly huffed and puffed would be a Typhoon inhaler (yeah, a few Typhoons have blown into the searches, I dunno how Typhoon got into the search  )

but for now, The Big Guy gots wheels, but if any of yall hear of a decent deal in the ny - nj - pa - md area, let me know!

Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

Why don't you guys quit diddling around with those scrunchy little jimmies and get a real vehicle. ;)
My friend just bought this Burb off of ebay.(auction closed during negotiation)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=6155&item=24 32660704

He paid the $15.5k We flew down from Portland OR two weeks ago this day and drove it back. I could not believe it. We hammered that Burb across Tejas, New Mexico, up through Arizona to the Grand Canyon, over to Kingman AZ, up thru Las Vegas and over to Death Valley, up US 395 to Reno then back in thru NE CA up to Klamath Falls and back into Vancouver WA.
It is a 350 cid MPI w/ 3:43 to 1 rear end. We drove it 70 to 75 mph almost all the way and half of it at 5000 ft or over (3000 mi total). That Burb averaged ****17.1 mpg***. The thing has ton's of room. Why you practically had to get up out of the passenger seat and walk over to slap the driver when he started nodding off.

We took 5 days coming back including a day stopover at the grand canyon. At the end of 12 hours on the road, you walk away from the rig without any of the usual fatigue that you experience from spending a full day in a smaller vehicle.

My friend has not pulled his boat with it yet but if it's performance on the throttle, up at 7000 ft, is any indication, he won't even know his boat is back there at lower altitudes.

I think I'm going to trade in my '94 454 throttle body Suburban.

17.1? hmmmmmmm ....

yanno, those jimmies are a bit small ...

a few years ago I Test drove a burb, 454 fuel infected, and that thing was flat amazing, tight response, cranked right up to 80 in no time, a totally amazing beastie

cept it dropped an 1/8 of a tank in a half hour! and in a burb, thats a LOTTA gas

:D

You could always get a fullsize Bronco. Fuel mileage in the upper teens. V8 power for towing, backseat for passengers, and a removable top if your adventurous. i have had a '78 for 10 years, and when i replace it, I'll have to get another. The origional Sport Utility with a capital SU. Bronco, can't be broken.

Bowfin

Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

a buddy of mine had a 79 with a 302, only got 12 with it, another buddy of mine has a 93 with overdrive, and gets 14 - on a trip!

hell, the explorer only got 16, and its a runt compared to the bronco, fords seem to be gas heavy, and as much driving as I do, with gas heading towards 2 bucks a gallon (can liter pricing be far behind?) I dunno!

Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

CastawayRay

"cept it dropped an 1/8 of a tank in a half hour! and in a burb, thats a LOTTA gas"

With these words you are describing my 1994 454 cid throttle body Burb with 4:10 rear end. I added a Banks Power Pack SS header and exhaust sytsem which really increased the performance but did nothing for the gas mileage. (9-11 mpg) It has throttle body injection and you could put a coffee cup under the injectors, at an idle, and fill it about as quick as filling it out of your thermos. It also only has about 7.8 to 1 mechanical compression. As you described, I can watch my fuel guage drop like an anchor.

This 99, we drove back from Houston, was a 350 cid w/ Multiport sequential fuel injection, with 3:43 rear end and has 9.0 to 1 mechanical compression. It has much more sophisticated fuel management and is actually rated at higher HP (with lower torque) than my 454.

On our last leg, from Reno to Vancouver WA, we drove 12 hours and still had a quarter tank left when we got home. It just blew me away. I wonder what kind of mileage we would have gotten if we had driven it at 60 to 65 and closer to sea level, all the way home.

If I were inclined to smaller rigs for economic reasons, I'd have to give the Big one some serious consideration. They say that the replacement for the 350 (5.7 liter) is even more efficient. (5.3 Liter, 2000 to present)

This weekend we are both haulin our boats out to Tillamook Bay, for a Boy Scout crabbing trip, over a small coastal range. It'll be interesting to see the comparative performance of the two Burbs.

Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

mid nineties is more in my range tho, the 99 is a jewel, of course I checked it out, oh man, yeah bubba, I would hop a plane to drive that sucker 3000 miles too

but I think I am going to fish in local waters for this next rig, my gf is bugging me to get one from a dealer, so I have a warranty, and I keep trying to tell her that they dont give warranties on older cars, they sell (at a hell of a cost) so called warranties that are so full of holes and conditions that by the time the car is actually fixed, youve spent more on the coverage and the labor and parts on what WASNT covered you are dollars behind

then again, a multiport 5.0 in a 95 (not sure when that came out, not up on the big boys) would sure do a decent job, and would keep the kid from wanting to drive "The Boat" which is what she calls any car bigger than a go cart

I just have a feeling that my car is going to become heavily used, kids whack cars up a lot, and our (well, her, but shes SO incredibly like me, id swear she was my biological offspring (dammn you mom, saying you hope I have a kid like me! :D )
is in the permit stage now, driving school ends REAL soon and then its time for the big road for the little kid, CLANG!!!!!!

I want to let her drive the chevy, but only after selling it to her mom for a dollar, lol, but I have to really wonder about that, which is better, a couple of thousand pounds of steel or a newer car with airbags? hmmmm - then again, I survived a few accidents without even seat belts on, lol

but there I go meandering again, I should prolly just do an eBay search for an extended cab pick up, throw a cross bed toolbox in the bed and be done with it, room power utility, all the things I want anyway

tho I did see a beautiful GMC all wheel drive van, like the Astro, that was one sweet rig, but I recall all wheel drive Astros being junk, the 4.3 was anvil solid, but trannies rained bad parts

cant win em all!

Re: So ya think YOUR day was bad??

Hey Castaway; Maybe a trip down to sunny Florida this winter Huh. If you don't need a 4x4, watch what happens with the selling prices of these 2 bys. 1997 was the first year of the Multiport Sequential Fuel Injection. (Vortec) It only took GM an extra nine years to add it compared to Ford. But then Ford didn't make a Burb.
I wouldn't hesitate to get a 100k unit if it hasn't had the guts pulled out by towing and if it hasn't been used on salted roads. That's why FLA and TX are big on selling Burbs.

My friend, who has driven Toyota 4runners, said "I can't believe I waited so long to buy one"

I, personally, don't use mine as a daily driver. I save it for recreation.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2437856898&category=6155

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2437044657&category=6155

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2437522672&category=6155

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2436533378&category=6155

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2437316708&category=6155

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2437522672&category=6155

I have a cousin in sunny Port Charlotte, he the infamous 6-5 Steve of local legends, who even at 41 busted his hand (and the side of the boat of some idiot that taunted him, imagine if it was his FACE  )

just one thing, florida is surrounded by salt water, I think only alaska has more salt shoreline, how is it that the sea side dwellers (cause unless you are into searing heat and giant roaches (palmetto bugs) humid nights so stifling hot hell would feel air conditioned, I cant imagine anyone living there otherwise!)

Ah, but to slip on shorts and sandals, and ease the boat out into the gulf on a 73 degree february day

thats the life!

I did find a rig that had me going a bit, a Dodge van, 97 with 73k miles, 2500 tradesman conversion, think it was a gladiator, loaded loaded loaded, everythhing imagineable, high top, tv, VCR, tilt, air, the works ... and that 3.7 V 6 Magnum is a strong motor, lemme tell ya, but its a DODGE, and its 2 wd, and I dunno, no warranty even at extra cost, and I didnt like some of the taps and vibrations I was hearing

the one woman Green eyed Monster parade took one look at the velvet covered sofa bed in the back and said, hmmmmmmm, I dont think so ( i dont think she likes the idea that I am losing weight, and cutting back the smokes, Im already getting rammier! hey, they call these things Dodge RAMS now right?

hmmmmmmmm

:D :D :D :D :p :p
