I am a new owner of a 1991 Sea Ray 185 Bowrider, 20'. it looks overall in great condition, low hrs. clean etc... My only concern , I dont think it is a real concern, is a retangular carpeted floor board in the aft section of the boat. it is spongy and warped a little, it looks like all I would have to do is remove the eight screws that hold this floor down and replace it with a new board of marine plywood and then carpet, is this all it needs or is it a sign of worse damage?

Hmm. Dry rot is a fungus that can spread.

Fix it quick, and carefully test the structure under it.

Good luck. :)

Enter "rot" in the red Search engine at the top of the page & read away.

I am assuming it is some sort of access hatch? If so, there is no reason why you can't get some good ply, be it marine or pressure treated or whatever, coat it with something to protect it further, and recarpet it. You'll just want to check the surrounding structure as best you can to make sure there isn't further rot. Good luck...

Hello, Sounds like the fuel tank access cover area to me. You are correct about removal. Just twist out the screws and the cover will lift off. You need to do what the other guys sugested and check under the cover for loose or rotting wood. There will be some framing that cradles the fuel tank and supports the cover. Make sure the wood is sound and rot free. If the cover is bowed replace it with a sheet of marine grade plywood. Seal the wood with marine poly or bilgecote. staple your carpet back on with monel or stainless staples. Drill some pilot holes in the orignal places the mounting screws were in. BE CAREFUL YOU DO NOT PUNCTURE THE TANK! Carefully replace the screws and you should be all set! Hope this helps!
