My 1988 Bayliner Capri has some wood thats soft and starting to rot in the rear under the right/drivers side rear seat. Some if it was bad enough I pulled it out by hand. Its between the storage compartment and bilge/engine compartment. It looks like a fairly straight forward repair. I just need to know what type of paint or coating to use after I replace the soft plywood. I also have other spots in the same area that have paint chipping off. I want to stay on top of it before it makes its way into the flooring. I was going to take some pics to add, but the camera on my cell is busted...sorry..

Thanks..

If you are finding THAT kind of damage on a Bayliner, you may be deluding yourself to think the repair need is limited to what you have found so far. I think you're going to have to get in there and dig a lot farther and are not going to like what you find. To answer your direct question, you use a coat polyester resin, let it partially cure then rewet with more resin and layup two layers of fiberglass mat oriented 45 degrees to one another if you can.

Bad news, dude. If your floor is so rotten that you can remove it by hand, your stringers and possibly your transom are shot, too. That boat's seen too much water up top.

Be prepared to gut the boat to do it right. Your alternative is a temporary patch job that won't be safe (or worth your time if you're keeping the boat).

If you're dedicated (Read: crazy) you can fix it all and have it back in the water before season's end, but you'd need to get on it right away.

Well, from what I can see its on the vertical divider between the storage area under the seat and bilge. Its hard to say if its gotten into the floor yet, but when I get the chance I'll dig at it and see how bad it is.

Thanks for the info.

Use a drill and drill into the wood and see what comes out. Fiberglass can hide rot.

You might want to take a peek at my situation.

It may give you some insight into what is behind the carpet/fiberglass...
When we bought our boat, I though I checked it out thoroughly. Not good enough for the boat gods.

Here is the URL to the blog:

It's coming along nicely though. I've had a lot of friends and people on this site explain that this work isn't hard, it's just time consuming. I couldn't agree more, it's actually been an exciting learning experience, and we'll know for sure we have a solid boat for years of enjoyment.

I hope this helps.
