Soft Spots/Rotting

Well I got my outdrive off today and started poking around in the holes there where the bolts go through the transom, and I noticed that in the plywood that is sandwiched between the outter hull and the inner layer of fiberglass, that there is quite a bit of rot in the areas immediately around the bolt holes. Is there a cure/repair for this? I figure I can cut out sections and replace them but how do I stop the rot from going any further than it is? Is there something called "stop rot" that I can apply to stop the rot at the edges, or maybe that you can fill in the rotten area and let it harden? I am looking for any advice on this. Thanks!

Re: Soft Spots/Rotting

Ahoy, Navy Guy.

First, be sure you understand that "Dry Rot" is neither dry nor rot. It is a fungus infestation of wet wood.

It operates like cancer, disintegrating the wood. The only way to "cure" it is to remove the infected wood completely. That will be a lot more wood than the part that has turned to mush.

Sorry, but you now have a project boat. :(
