Is it possible for a solenoid to overheat and not work. Went out with my 1988 Johnson 88spl started fine, stopped and when I went to crank her back up I heard a sizzling sound. After a little while she cranked back over like nothing was wrong. No clicking noise just sounded like bacon frying. Any ideas?

Re: soleniod

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Try starting the motor at night with the cover off.

Re: soleniod

Loose or corroded battery terminals would be the most likely culprit. Remove and clean them up shiny bright and it probably will be fine. Don't just look at or wiggle them, CLEAN them. If that wasn't it, then most likely loose at the other end of the cables. The sizzle sound is electricity trying to jump across the loose gap or corrosion. In other words, sparks. OK, it is possible that the sparks are within the solenoid, but so unlikely that it isn't worth considering in most cases.

BTW, those bad connections can destroy other components, such as the alternator rectifier, so fix it without delay.
