I put a new solenoid on my 1987 85hp Force and the black ground wire was frayed, so I was going to replace it. while unscrewing it from my terminal post the head on the screw broke!! so I just wired it to the ground on the the rectifier. It started up fine, as long as its a ground I should be ok, right?

Yeah! Ground is ground is ground! The rectifier is grounded to the block. Ultimately, they all end up at the neg end of the battery. Doesn't matter where you ground it and redundant grounds are good because many problems can be traced back to inadequate grounding.
