Hello, I have a 1969 SeaRay w/Mercruiser inline 6 and it has 160HP. I have had a problem with the battery discharging over night ever since I bought it. I am on my third battery now due to it going bad. I have traced wiring and found a solenoid that was located under the exhaust manifold directly behind the alternator. The part number for the solenoid is 25661 and can be found on the following web site: http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/ProductSelection/Accessories/getProduct.asp?sku=25661&SPHomeqty=&store=ServiceParts&statusMsg=The+part%3A++25661+has+been+substitute d+with%3A++25661T+1&CID=170162190069225061272

There are four terminals on this solenoid and the front two are labeled - S & I but the outer two are not labeled. Does anyone know what the outer two are supposed to hook up to? I want to double check this because I found a ground wire connected to the terminal - I. Just to make sure the S=Starter and the I=Ignition?

Thanks for your help,
Bruce

S ahould be from key switch start position
I should be an ignition ballast resistor or resistance wire bypass.
The other two get a positive from battery on one side and the other side goes to the starter motor selenoid.
This is a starter relay also known as a slave selenoid.
some are wired with the start wire on s and have another terminal where your I terminal is that goes to ground to ground the selenoids coil.

If your selenoid is marked S and I though, that I terminal should feed the hot side of the ignition coil, not to ground. However if it has a ground wire on it it should blow a fuse when the key is turned to start (unless the case of the selenoid is marked with an I and shouldnt be).

To trace your battery going dead problem I would turn off all accessories and connect an amp meter at the battery,if you show current then you have a drain on the battery.
To isolate this pull all the fuses and see if the drain goes away.
Put the fuses back 1 at a time until you find the right circuit. Then follow all the wires on that circuit.
Good Luck and have fun

probably a starter slave solenoid. any other wires on it? my 78 boat has one and is wired like this. two small wires one on each small terminal, one from the the key switch and one to ground. three larger wires, one from the big starter post and another on the same terminal going thru the circuit breaker up to the dash ammeter. the other large terminal wire goes to the starter solenoid and supplies start current. i have given up on post labels and wire colors as a guide since they can be different.
