I have a 5.7l Merc Engine, When I try to start the boat when its cold I only hear a click. I believe it to be the solenoid. After attempting to or three turns of the ignition key it starts. Once the motor is started or is warm the problem doesnt happen.

I had the starter rebuilt 1 and a half years ago after believing that was the issue however it didnt fix it.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Solenoid ?

It sounds like your slave solenoid is not working all the time. What i would do is put a meter on the starter side of the slave solenoid and see if you get 12 volts while trying to crank the engine. You need to do it at the time that it is not cranking.if you have 12 volts at that point you can rule out the slave solenoid, and concentrate on the main starter and solenoid.
Justin
justin@sterndrive.cc
www.sterndrive.cc

Re: Solenoid ?

the starter solenoid does two things. it engages the sstarter gear into the flywheel and sends power to the starter. on the front of delco type solenoids, there is a copper washer that contacts the big post. sometimes the washer and post will corrode or wear away. as the solenoid is operated, the washer can rotate allowing it to find a good contact area. some of these solenoids can be disassembled and the post rotated 180 degrees and the washer cleaned. this solenoid usually makes a louder noise that the slave solenoid because it engages the starter gear. since the starter was reworked, i would suspect one of the two solenoids.
