Re: solex carb

I tried to find one of my old posts to copy/paste this but oh well, here you go:

1st set your timing. Yup set your timing with a timing light (and the dwell too if you still have points) If the timing is off, then no carb adjustment will ever fix it.

Ok, now to adjust the carb:

1.Put it in the water and let it warm up.

2.Put in gear (forward) at idle speed and adjust the idle screw so that the rpms are at the proper idle speed of 900rpm. Too fast and it'll be hard to dock or control at low speed, too slow and you'll have stalling issues. This also means that it will idle in neutral a little higher, about 1000-1100rpm, that's not important though.

-----------oh wait, you said just the accel pump, not the whole carb...ugh--------

Yeah the nut on the rod that attaches to the accel pump. Back it out to make the accel pump fire faster, screw it in to delay.

I would do it running and with the cover off so you can see the delay of the gas stream from the 'candy-cane'. Watch out for backfires though, keep your face away from overtop of the carb!

I found it easier to disconnect the throttle cable from the carb so you can do it all at the carb without running back and forth or needing a helper.

Curious as to why you ask though. Are you getting the classic bog right off idle? I had that a long time ago and though it was the pump. Rebuilt the carb, no different. I rewired everything in the alternator circuit (the heavy wires from the alt to the starter, to the battery, etc. and replaced the ignition coil with an Accel street stock unit, problem went away. (I am running the electronic igntion also, but that was there since I got the boat)

In all honesty I am not sure if it was the new wires or the coil, since I did both things at the same time. I know that my alternator connection -the hot wire- was really crappy.

I used to have to pump the heck out of the throttle to make it get past putting it into gear...after stumbling badly, the RPMs would rise enough and it would run out ok. After a couple times out like that, it got old. There are times when you WANT to go medium speed. All mine would do was chug at idle speed and go fast.

Oh yeah get some new plugs and gap them properly. Ive got a set of those 4-electrode plugs in mine- no gapping required, it was the closest app for a Volvo 4 cylinder i could find, I forget the number. (just stick with the recommended units for now...mine was running just fine on the real plugs)

This is mine, shortly after a rebuild.

Re: solex carb

yes that sounds exactly how my boat is acting. i have new coil ,plugs ,plug wires, carb rebuilt ,new electronic ign,new cap ,new rotor, new gas ,new filter, and i m dieing to go fishing i ll try adjusting my accel pump , and i ll get some help to time it,cause it wont idle i have to keep pumping the gas to keep it running . i ve had this prob. for a while now but it did idle before, after it warmed up .and wide open it ran fine ,but slow speed ,bogging, but now worse then ever.i went thru all my wiring and it looks good .so thanks for the info and i hope i cure the problem like you did

Re: solex carb

I had the same bog down problem too.

I fixed it by getting the timing spot on and then adjusting the carb.

The carb adjustment is the finicky part because there is no exact specs you can set it to and make it work perfect, you have to just spend some quality time with it and tweak it.

Some things I noticed:
-the Idle needs to be set for while in gear.
-the mixture screw should be set to the book specs and then adjusted from there.
-try not to over-adjust the mixture screw, it shouldn't take several turns of anything to get right.
-the accelerator pump needs to be adjusted so that gas squirts right when you hit the gas so it doesn't bog down or die
-the mixture screw and accel pump adjustment work together, if the mix is way off then the accel pump will have a hell of a time making up for it.

If it won't idle (after it's warm) then somethings wrong. Either your idle screw is not adjusted to 900rpm, or if it's dying at normal idle speed your mixture screw is really off, or the timing may be way off, possible the belt jumped a tooth even.

Do you still have points? Have you put a timing belt on since you've had it?
