Hey All,

i just pulled the flywheel off to double check my point gapping and found that one of the coil wires was rubbing on the inner ring of the flywheel and is worn half way through. The coils also both show what appears to be corrosion and wear on the top 1/3. Can anyone suggest possible causes and effects and maybe what i should do with the coils?

thanks,
dean

Throw the coils in the trash. They're done. Causes could be that the magneto plate is worn out and wobbling, the magneto plate was not tightened down correctly or was misaligned, the coils were mounted incorrectly, they were the wrong coils, the flywheel was tightened down too far, etc, etc.....

Hey tx1961whaler,

Thanks, i was afraid of that. Any idea what would be the effect of having coils damaged like this?

By the way, i finally figured out what caused it. This engine doesn't have a stator plate or anything else that comes anywhere near the coils in this area but i recently had to replace my flywheel puller and the bolts were long enough to pass through the flywheel and in pulling the flywheel last year i'm sure that they scored the coils. grrr.

thanks,
dean

If the laminations are not mashed together and shorted they may work for a while, but once the coating is broken the start to corrode and they quit working, usually when you're in the middle of a fishing trip.

thanks. Yeah they're still working but i'll be heading and see if i can get some replacements.

Only a month ago we almost got caught on the wrong side of the lake while i learned that there is a bushing in propellers. Oh the things you can learn on the far from the harbour. :)
