We have a code project we have been working on for over half a year. LOTS of lines of code. Anyhow I upgraded to the newest version of Visual Studio and tried to load the project and I get the "must be converted" message and tell it to go ahead. Hard drive grinds for awhile and then I am told "some" things didn't convert properly. Yeah, "some" turns out to be about 1/4 of the code and even a couple .Net controls.


GRrrrr..... Yes, I have everything backed up and yes I'll wipe the new version of VS and reinstall the older version but what a pain in the ashtray! A user/coder should be able to upgrade one version number without it destroying everything!

I am right there with ya bubba!

I am about ready to throw my new laptop out in the yard, just upgraded to 7 ultimate and it is not playing right with the ATI card installed in the machine, even with every current driver that can be found and Microsoft, AMD and ATI all say they have no solution!

Seems to me with the tens of millions spent on R&D they could make something newer that works!

Problem is, it was not working with the vista os that came from the manufacture installed on it either!

Oh I feel your pain...... I think attacking microsoft will only give them a reason for yet more software changes on OS.......

I have a nice set of Terrain Navigator software where I have every topo map in NY and all of New England..... I interface and download my gps data to it and can plot waypoints and where I have ventured to in the mountains...... WELL it works fine with XP but will not work with Win 7....... same for filemaker pro and others. Gee whiz the laptop is looking like the cheap investment and all the software is the costly part just to match the microsoft OS

It sure would be nice for microsoft to install emulator software so we can continue to use all of our programs.

Don't worry, I also have two Mac Laptops, and they are not without problems!

^true, but messing up a Mac is kinda like breaking an anvil. It can be done, (my wife is particularly good at it) but it doesn't happen easily.

Unfortunately in a couple of years you'll have no choice. XP won't be compatible with the software. Just like Windows 2000 was left behind. Just a matter of time.

I upgraded to win 7 ultimate on an 7yo laptop and a 2yo desktop and both run great. It's amazing I found dell drivers for a 7 almost 8 yo laptop that work with win 7 no problem, all drivers for all components work!

With what my wife and do for a living now, actually it is quite easy to break either of the operating systems whether Mac or Windows...

Maybe you all need to be making the switch to Linux? That is an OS that will happily run forever and won't ask you for a dime. While I'm writing this from a Macbook running OS X, there are many a day I truly miss running Linux as my daily OS. Maybe it's just flame for this war, but it is a fine OS & my 68 year old mother is enjoying it quite a bit on her laptop without any problems (more than could be said for her previous Windows XP mess). I'm enjoying not having to support it every other day

Yes this is a great OS. I have been running it for a year now and absolutely love it! You can install it along side your windows OS and have a dual boot system that gives you a choice of either OS when you start your computer. The cool thing about Linux is that you can also put the OS on a pen drive, insert it into someone's usb port and boot up their computer! You can look at and copy window files and not leave a trace that anyone was snooping around. The other cool thing is that it will run forever without the need to reboot. If windows gets corrupted sometimes it has to be reformatted and re-installed,Linux, on the other hand can be repaired....usually and magically all by itself. I run Ubuntu that is free and comes with a office suite that is almost identical to Microsoft Office. There is also a software repository with tons of free software.

I accidentally reduced a couple of my customers to tears with the following statement:

"I used to hate windows with a purple passion, but I've since discovered that it's job security."

Every time a new update gets installed, something crashes somewhere, and I get paid to figure it out.

My wife runs linux servers in her web business, believe they can be broke pretty easy as well. But I have to say, I have run linux on my laptop and that might end up being the way I go, but the problem I am having has been experienced on a linux box also, just not quite as often..

Unfortunately no OS can fix crappy software that runs on it. Some just handle them better than others.
