the last few days my boat has been acting up a bit with regard going into gear. will try an explain as best I can.

When Put down the throttle stick on my boat goes into forward gear OK i think as the prop starts to turn very slowly boat hardly moves but wit no kick, But then when it reaches 1300 revs it kicks in like it normally would. and of it.

I disconnected the throttle cable from the handle and put the handle in the full down position and nothing. but then when I go the the carb and manually bring the revs it to in around 1300 or more it kicks into gear.

Thanks for reading your help would be appreciated

What drive package are you working on? Merc, volvo, omc, 'other'?

I couldn't make a whole lot of sense from your original post, but sounds like your reving up while shifting into forward making it shift hard. Is that correct?

If it is, check your fluid level in your drive. If it is too full, it will cause it to shift hard into gear.

Hope this helps.

It's very hard to explain. When is fully in gear accordind to the handle in the boat it won't go/kick into forward gear till it revs up to around 1300 - 1400 rpm

My engine was reving up before the drive would shift into gear. When it did that, it would 'shift hard.' It would jolt the boat as it banged into gear. You're drive should shift when the rpm's are closer to idle.

My drive was overfilled. When I changed my fluid, I filled it to the correct level and now it shifts fine.

It only shifted hard when shift into forward. Reverse would always shift smoothly.

Thank you for your reply. The only thing I have not put new gear oil in or topped it up since last year and it was working ok..the cable is adjusted as much as it can be from inside the boat, but has streched a little so as the drive end is just not fully catching into gear, until the revs build up?

If it's not the fluid level in the drive, then I'll have to defer to some of the more knowledgeable members here. I've never had to do any adjustments to the shift or throttle linkage.

I hate I couldn't help. Good luck.

Do you have a service manual for your drive? If not, you can download one from the adults only section up top. It should give you some trouble shooting ideas.
