I am having an issue, i have a mercruiser 898, with an alpha out drive, the problem is, i had to replace the lower shift shaft in the out drive, after making sure it was all in forward as i put it all back together and also reinstalling the outdrive everything was in forward gear, went together pretty smoothly, the problem i am having is when shifting to check to make sure everything works, i loose all gears. I am thinking it might be the lower shift cable...if amyone can give me some ideas it would be great. or any ideas on how to check to make sure that is the problem...i have tried adjusting the shift cable but did not work.

Thanks and Happy boating

Stick your head down under the sterndrive and see if the shifter is properly engaged to eachother. If all is meshed well, you could move shifter thru the positions and make sure things are moving properly... at the sterndrive / bell housing attach point. If all is functioning well on the boat side and the shifter is moving things as it should... i would look where you just were.

lower shaft can be a bit tricky, drop the lower and see if you can shift manually for F,N,R in their right position.

more of a question is the direction it locks .In fwd gear the prop locks counter-clockwise because it spins clockwise when it`s in gear.Likewise ,in reverse it locks clockwise even though it spins counterclockwise in gear.

oh crap, i think that is the problem, it was installed with the prop LOCKING in the clock wise direction, not the counter clock wise
