I was there once for a few hours (went to Bass Pro Shops). The town seemed ok. Springfield seemed centrally located to some nice places to visit like Branson, Lake of the Ozarks and Kansas City.
I like Arkansas better though.

I'm not sure on the fishing. I think Lake of the Ozarks can be tuff bass fishing since its so clear so you will have to learn California tactics.
There was a couple other lakes around there also but I can't remember there names. If you have a vehicle fishing won't be a problem because the states are so close together you can fish all the big name lakes.
There a alot of ponds in that part of the country so you shouldn't have to hard of time finding some descent fishing close by.
There's also an exotic animal park that gives tours in a jeep/bus. I think its near Branson.
When I was there 10 years ago I remember being fairly impressed with Missouri. Missouri's not a dump like Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, etc.
Good Luck

Re: some info on Missouri needed

Stopped in last spring to see an old friend that lives in Branson. It was real windy that day and with his 16 footer, I couldn't talk him into the "big water", so we drove up to Springfield... seemed like a very nice town.

We fished just north of town in a small lake - maybe 1000 acres at the most, Lake Fellow, I think was it's name. It was less than a 5 minute drive from Springfield. Anyhow, caught 15 or so Walleyes between us and a handfull of fair-sized LM Bass, but there was a kicker! I tied into some kind of Sea Monster! Took me all over the place, it did. I thought I had a wall-hanging Walleye for sure. When it finally came out of the water - and boy, did it ever, I was face to face with the biggest MUSKIE I've ever had the pleasure of locking horns with. She was a beauty - 42 1/2"! I really wanted to put that fish on my wall, but my friend told me there's a slot for keeping them, so I let it go. Come to find out later that there IS a slot, and mine was IN that slot! :( Maybe next time.

Seems I seen some motor restrictions at the ramp though, can't recall what they were. My friend has an old Alumacraft 16' with a 40 hp Evinrude and evidently that is allowed.

A small friendly town less than 5 minutes from Muskies... I'd say the move is a good one, but that's just me. Ozarks aint too far either ;)

I live in Missouri. Just south of Kansas City. Bad roads and humidity are very true! I've been down by Springfield a few times, there is plenty of good fishing whether you go to Table Rock, Bull Shoals, Tanneycommo (for trout), Lake of the Ozarks etc.. Get into Arkansas and you have the popular Beaver lake.
Lots to do and see, good fishing and hunting too.

Springfield MO is one of prettiest and cleanest cities that I have visited. We used to drive through it on the way to and from Junction City KS. If I had to choose one of the cities that I hve visited to live in permantly, Springfield would be in the top three (Excluding where I'm at now in Milton FL) The draw-backs to living in Springfield arethe summer heat (that region gets so hot in the summer, KS, OK and MO form a hot spot in the center of the country for some reason) and tornados. Up there the twisters are HUGE! WAy bigger than they get down here. I will take hurricanes any day over the tornados they get. But, it is a clean friendly town with the same people you meet everywhere else.

The worst roads are in California and we pay more in taxes than probablly all the other states combined to keep them up (seems like it)
Caltrans here is a joke. I saw on the news the other day when Caltrans comes across a bottle of urine that someone has tossed out the window they pay $7,000 each time to have a hazardous material company come and pick it up.
It seems that the roads that are bad stay bad and the roads that are nice get repaved every five years or so. Doesn't make sense to me.

Well dang since our roads here in Wisconsin are not what I would call great it seems to me that this poor road thing is on a national level and driving down there may suck through each state. Oh and Jay $7000 ?????? I would consider doing it for $700 :)
