As posted last week my trusty ole' DT 225 took a dump on the #5 cylinder due to ethanol issues. So, being an idiot I bought a new DF250 to replace it with. Now, I was thinking ( and that usually gets me into a heap of trouble )
about bringing the old 225 home and try to rebuild ( replace ) that cylinder myself. I'm half way decent with a wrench - kinda' - and thought it might be a challenge if nothing else.
Soooooooo - with that being said could someone out there please convince me NOT to do this ??? I need another project like I need another hole in my head.

It would be something to do during the Winter.

I don't buy the "ethanol issues" diagnosis, though it is a way to blame it on somebody else.

Re: Somebody STOP me !!!!!

actually Ill buy the ethanol excuse.
not because of a specific fuel blend but the damage it causes and the simple fact that for marine use ethanol blends simply dont work well.
it tends to clean vanish and debris plus attract water that tends to clog VST filters and injector screens causing a cylinder to run lean.
most cars tend to hold less than 20 gallons, they tend to turn over fuel weekly and modern vehicles have sealed fuel systems.
boats tend to hold 60 plus gallons, fuel may sit for months at a time and most are vented to the atmosphere and tend to operate in a faily moist environment. even the marina near where I work is still selling fuel they put in the tanks last october. thats the other factor, couple all the factors and it can be a disaster.
now on to the rebuild question.
if corrosion inside the water passages isnt severe its a very simple motor to replace cylinders on.
always remove the head and exhaust water jackets and carefully inspect for corrosion.
when the heads are removed carefully inspect the cyl block surface where the cyl sleeve meets the casting.
the cyl banks on that engine can be replaced without splitting the block halves.
biggest issue is do you have anything left worth rebuilding.
only inspection will tell.
then you MUST find out why that piston let go or it WILL do it again.
