hello- I have a 1989 force 35 model #357F9A - this motor is in mint condition, not a scratch, super clean, always maintained, starts right up, and runs like a top...
For the first time I dropped the lower unit and attempted to change the impeller. Everything seemed to go smooth. I had to tap the seal retainer off of the top of the drive shaft to remove it so that I could slide the old impeller off. I noticed that the driveshaft spline seal was a bit worn, but since I didn't have an new seal I re-used it. Everything went back together smoothly, I had to rotate the flywheel a bit to re-engage the drive shaft. I eventually got it to re-align and got everything bolted back together. I engaged the forward gear and hand rotated the flywheel to make sure that the prop would turn. It did, so far so good. I put the motor in a bucket of water and tried to start it. Nothing. This motor always starts right up. I triple checked everything. Nothing for several more attempts. I turned my idle screw a half turn clockwise to give it more fuel and it finally started. The pump immediately started spitting water, but something else was wrong.
This is what I noticed is different from my motors normal operation:
1. I am hearing a "whirring" sound from under the flywheel, like I can hear the gears meshing- I never heard this before.
2. There is a lot of excessive vibration. It would shift into both forward and reverse fine, but a lot of abnormal vibration.
3. It didn't want to start like it normally does.
I only let it run for 30 seconds t avoid doing any damage.....
What did I do?
Could the worn seal not have set properly?
Did I not put the seal retainer back on tight enough?
Uggh, this motor was perfect.
Thanks for any help.
