Something to try before cutting flywheel...

Here's my story...'86 85 hp force. Tried pulling flywheel with 1/4-20 grade 8 bolts and the bolts ripped right out of the flywheel. Tapped to 5/16 and used grade 8 and one bolt ripped out. Took it to marina and the guy couldnt get it off either. Here's how I got it off...I had the powerhead on the ground pistons facing up...I used a small cro-bar between the top of the water jacket and the flywheel. Pryed a few times and held it...hit it hard 3-5 times with my klein 16oz hammer...rotated 1/4 turn and repeated the process until the flywheel popped off. The nut was a pain in the *** to get back off because I smacked it wrong a few times. It didn't come off with much force it must not have ever been removed. This was a last resort I wouldnt reccomend you try to remove the flywheel like this unless you cant get it off any other way. Also don't pry too hard just hard enough until you see the flywheel move.

Jason: Didn't anyone ever tell you about "our friend heat?" You tighten the three bolts then torque down the center bolt good and tight, but not strip tight. Bang on the center nut with at least a 22 ounce "fine adjustment tool" and if that doesn't do it, heat the center of the flywheel with a propane torch. All but the most stubborn will pop off with a satisfying bang.

I didnt try that because the guy at the marina claimed he tried heating it up and all that and wouldn't come off.

I will try that on the other powerhead though...still have to pull the other flywheel. I didn't have any luck with heat when I tried the first time then again I was afraid to get it too hot. How hot does it need to be?

You don't need to worry with a propane torch. It won't get hot enough to do damage. Sometimes you need heat and you also need to smack it a couple of good ones with a 3 pounder. 16 ounce framing hammer just will not do.

70 Chrysler 55hp flywheel..

I didn't have the 3 holes.. Well I do, but didn't have a puller big enough..

Spun the nut till it was level with the shaft. Put a 2 jaw puller (3 would have been better, but it's all I have), Started pulling till tight, heat with propane torch, not much, about 40 seconds or so around the shaft and a few smacks with a hammer. POP!!

I was thinking about trying a 3 jaw puller but they're expensive...I believe the flywheel on the 85hp is 10+ inches. The greater the width the more expensive they are.

Re: Something to try before cutting flywheel...

Not sure if this is any help but i used a steering wheel puller with washers to keep it even and ever so carefully used my impact gun to turn the bolt and mine popped off. I am not saying this is good or bad but it worked for me.

have you tried to hit the starter? i bought a spare motor, that the owner claimed he could not get the flywheel off. took it home, connected the battery, hit the switch, and the flywheel came off no problem.

I use a 8 inch 3 jaw puller and a 3# hammer. You can get one like it from Harbor Freight ITEM 40970-AAA

Loosen the nut.Don't remove it.
Install the puller and use an impact wrench and put a lot of pressure on it. Then when you think it's about to break, you hit it with the hammer on the center bolt.Keep your hands away and wear safety glasses.J

Re: Something to try before cutting flywheel...

1. Is it common to get damage to the crank?s threads or flywheel nut?
Which is most likely from using the hammer?

2. Personally, I have replaced my nut due to feeling it was stripping or worn.
Knowing the right size nut for my 1970 Chrysler 35 HP was my next
problem. I found a bolt in my junk that the nut mated with and headed to
the Hardware Store. I feel it was a standard nut due to age and
Chrysler. Except! The wear could have been throwing me off.

3. Will your manual show the correct nut size for my 35 HP Chrysler?
Plus, is the size in my Clymer Chrysler/Force Outboard Shop Manual
3.5 ? 140 HP 1966 ?1988?
Last, should my torque FT Lbs be 45 or 80 ( feel I have seen both on this
board?

Thanks! JOW

Wickware.you should start another thread.
You NEVER ever hit the crank or nut with a hammer. My post said hit the bolt from the 3 jaw puller. It's not touching the threads.J

Jerry, no offence, I?m still learning. Is your puller pushing against the loose flywheel nut or crank?s top when you ?Pop The Puller?s Bolt?? Crank?s top which I feel can take the Pops is my guess. Thanks, JOW

Non taken.Yep the bolts resting on the top of the crank. There is an indent that the pullers bolt fit's into.Auto zone has pullers they rent or loan..J
