1958 Johnson Super Seahorse 35hp RDSL-20

OK...It's running! Starts right up but ... All I am getting out of the pee hole is steam and small spurts of warm water. This motor has a thermostat which I've not checked this time around. I remember seven years ago that it never did throw a stream of water, but I think it threw more than I am seeing now. I'm afraid to do more than start it and shut it down... don't want to ruin the motor so I haven't let it get too hot. Is this normal or wrong for an old motor with a thermostat? Will the flow increase when the thermostat opens? Am I worrying for no reason? The water pump (housing and impeller) is new and I'm certain it is installed correctly so there should be no reason for it to not work. This motor had a rubber boot between the lower housing and the port that the water is supposed to come out of. That boot was destroyed so I replaced it with two pieces of heater hose that fit perfectly between the port and the housing. I was a little worried that some of the water was supposed to run inside the housing, but I figured I could change that around if that was the case. The way it is set up, all of the water being spit out by the motor should be coming out of that pee hole. Any suggestions? What should I be seeing?
Thanks
Tom
