How do i figure out what type of lower unit I have. and how do I know which ones would work? (i.e. alpha bravo or the generation?)

its on a 140hp mercruiser on a 73 cobalt.

I'm soooo new to boats. I'm a mechanic so I wouldn't say I'm dumb but these boats sure are different animals.

Basically, you have an Alpha One, Generation 1 with a 2:1 gear ratio....;)
If it has the 'eyehook' it is pre alpha, but for all intents & purposes any alpha will bolt right on to your bell housing....:)

If you need to change the drive be sure to replace it with the correct gear ratio.

Re: sorry i'm so full of questions

is 1.98:1 the same as 2:1 (the 2 is just rounding up)

is this ratio driveshaft turns to prop turns? why is this so crucial? I told you I'm a newb....

1) Yes....
2) Yes....
3) It keeps the motor from 'lugging' by keeping it in it's proper power band, thus making life easier for the engine's innards......;)
