went to a volvo dealer, to ask what oil to put into 97 4.3 volvo gs, he said to put volvo's 15/50 in at £25 for 5litres (me in the uk) I can get straight 30w oil for £10 for 5 litres and thats what it says in the manual. to use 30w. If i am going to use 15/50 any problems using auto oil which is half the priceof volvo's???????? which doeseveryone recomend????

simon

i am always dubious of multigrades that claim to stretch too far.. i would prefer a more normal automotive good quality 15/40.. a straight 30 would be okay thow.. to be honest i dont think it matters that much..

trog100

the UK temps are fairly stable throughout the year. I can't see why a straight sae30 won't do.

I have always believed that quality oil is important, however, I personally believe these unique marine "weights" are a scam. With that said, I have been sucked in and buy the 25W40 that Mercruiser recommends which of course you cannot get from amybody else. If my manual said straight 30, I'd be all over that . . .

Re: sorry, oil question!!!!!!

The category SG denotes service typical of gasoline engines in passenger cars, vans, and light trucks beginning with 1988 through 1993 model years operating under manufacturers' recommended maintenance procedures. Oils developed for this service provide improved control of engine deposits, oil oxidation, and engine wear relative to oils developed for previously. These oils also provide protection against rust and corrosion. Oils meeting API Service Category SG may be used where API Service Categories SF, SE, SF/CC or SE/CC are recommended.

SG is an obsolete API category. The current SM oils will exceed the performance of the old SG.

According to the oil requirements, if operating above freezing temps either the 15W-50 or the SAE 30 will work fine. Both oils will exceed the manufacturer's specification, so really it's a matter of what you want to pay.

FYI, I use the recommended Volvo Penta oil but get it from Volspec Ltd (01621 869756) www.volspec.co.uk. They will advise exactly what you need and give between 10-15% discount on list delivered by mailorder. Mine cost £21 delivered. Excellent service and advice and you get the genuine product with rapid delivery. Im sure other oils will work perfectly but for £21 a season Id prefer to use the recommended oil.

Yes, it is an obsolete oil category, But my personal opinion is that the new SM is too void of additives for older engines. They have lowered the amount of some additives that may be necesary for optimum protection of flat tappet cams. It appears that the SM oils have about half of the Zinc and Phosphorus of the older oils. I would either use the new Mercriuser 25W-50, 15W-40 HDDO, or one of the long life oils. I recently saw 20W-50 Longlife in the NAPA brand the other day.

JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION.
