Sounds like odd advice?

I was talking to what i have come to find out is one of the only 2 people willing to work on force motors in this area earlier. He told me to take the cover off the carbs and run it like that then when it warms up to put my hand over the opening at the front of the carb and see if it chokes the engine or not to determine if the carbs are clogged. Since it sat all winter, he said it is part of his tune up checks. To me this sounds a little odd, in my thinking if i cover the opening like he said with my hand and block the air then naturally it would have problems running. Is this true ? Or is his suggestion a good one? He said even though i have no problem starting and running it just doesnt respond right away when i open the throttle up fast it hesitates then snaps and away we go. I was going to have him sync the carbs due to not being able to get the time to do that and not having a timing light. But he told me to do this test first since it sounded like clogged jets. I dont disagree with a fuel problem could cause this i just dont quite understand the whole blocking air flow off and it not causing issues like he was describing.

Well, everyone has their own way of doing things. (Notice that I am being charitable here)

I however, believe that this test shows nothing in your case. You say that the engine hesitates then"grabs" and takes off. The high speed jet LIMITS the amount of fuel at full throttle and you don't have a full throttle problem. Thus, the high speed jet is not clogged.

Now, if the low speed circuit and needle were clogged, limiting the midrange fuel delivery, then covering the carb with your hand would indeed "choke" the engine. However, the only problem with this is that when you cover the carb, it will preferentially suck fuel from the easiest orifice which is the high speed jet and dip tube. Thus: It tells you nothing.

If there is no change when adjusting the low speed needle, especially if you can go more than 2 turns out, then most likely the low speed circuit is clogged.

Anyway, if you suspect clogged carbs, you might as well bite the bullet, remove them, disassemble and clean them.

I might also suggest trying the other guy, but really, you will be much better off finding the time to do maintenance and repairs yourself.

Yea i figure it is probably a fuel line issue that may be causing some issues i found some line in the sed bowl the other day. So i am replacing the fuel line tommorow from the tanks to the fuel pump. And i have the repair manual now just need the time to do any work to it. Thanks frank. I really didnt think it was going to show me anything.
