Hi all,

I'm looking for some type of petcock or ball valve to replace my oil pan drain plug, in order to facilitate oil changes. I have a 1985 Merc 140 (3.0).

In my limited searches, all I've found are the dipstick siphon type oil change kits that you hand crank or attach to a drill, etc. So far when changing the oil I've been pulling the plug and putting a bucket under the transom drain, then soaking up the remaining oil in the bilge that doesn't drain out the transom. Not the cleanest of soloutions to say the least, nor the most environmentally friendly! It would be so much easier to put a drain hose through the transom, turn the valve, and let 'er rip.

I've seen them discussed, so they must exist. Unless, of course, they were home made. Anyone have a source for such a thing? Thanks, Chuck in WA

I'm sure someone will know where to steer ya, did you look on this site?
For like thirty bucks you can get one that goes through the dipstick & hooks uo to the battery....
It's what I use, relatively mess free......JK

Do you realize you DO NOT have to stick a tube down the dipstick tube to suck the oil out? Just hooking any of the pumps on the market on the top of the dipstick tube will do the job.
Now, if you still want to drain it out of the pan, Mercruiser has a kit that installs in the bottom of the pan, you warm up the oil (not just the engine) pull the oil drain hose out the garboard drain plug on the bottom of your boat and let it flow into a pan. Flow is really the wrong word, it's more like dribbles into a pan. Doesn't require a valve. Just cap the hose and keep the end above oil level and you are safe. No pressure.

You should do some more checking on the Fram valve. I saw them at Advance Auto a few months ago and looked for some information on the size that I needed for my 3.0 volvo Penta. The next day I went back to Advance and they were not on the shelf. I asked the manager and he told me that he got a notice from Advance corporate to pull them from the shelf as they were reported to leak and Fram no longer distributes them.

They (Fram) are not a problem. Its idiots putting them on. It has a soft copper washer for sealing. You can't torque it down with a 15 inch wrench. Plus, it has a brass cap that goes over it, with a simple o-ring inside that will seal it completly....but again, FINGER TIGHT. Jerks toss slip-joint pliers on that and crank it down too. It has ZIP to do with the product. PLUS, they come in FIVE sizes SD 1 through 5. Metrics and SAE. How many people just grabbed what looked close, and ended up putting in a metric thread in an SAE hole. Got them on my Harley's, not enough room in my big boat (stringer too close to get the hose/valve in without kinking the hose), and on my van, I would, but its just too damn easy to use a pan. Again, product is fine, but like most things in this world, its not idiot proof. Stupid should be painful...

And..Fram no longer distributes them. Yet somehow they still advertise then (see my link)
Facts run the world, rumors destroy it......
