Spam control?

I am being bombarded with what appears to be an ever increasing amount of spam with the random, goofy, nonsensical subject titles. It gets to be a pain in the arse to weed thru these and delete them. Ya got to pay close attention lest you miss a legitimate email sandwiched in between.

I am using Outlook express thru Comcast cable. Can anyone recommend a good spam filter program that would at least divert these to a seperate folder if not block them all together?

I just wish these things could be all bounced back so that they overload the servers that they are sent out on.

Re: Spam control?

Hmmm, I thought this was discussed before....

Get Thunderbird TB

Install same, it will ask to import all of the Outlook stuff, say Yes...

Pop over to Comcast, log into your account, turn on the spam filter for your email accounts. Kill any Comcast emails for 'extra' services and misc. crap....

As for using MIE and Outlook.....dump them..."If you don't want to get hit by the train, get off the tracks"

Frankly, I'd be much more concerned about the latest MS problem (not that your problem is any less frustrating)...

to wit: Yike's, here we go agan...

Re: Spam control?

Go use a new email server (you still use comcast as a server)...I use Myway.com. I have the filter OFF, and get maybe 1 spam in 50 emails, and I've used it for years. They do a tremendous job filtering out the crap. Just google Myway.com
From Google..
My Way is a web portal and search engine like Yahoo!, but without any banners,
pop-ups or spam. No ads means more room for our terrific personalized ...
http://www.myway.com/ -

I use .Mac mail, no spam. Don't know if you need a Mac to get an account.

Of course I have a Mac, running OS X, so there are no pop-ups, spyware, or viruses either.

Darn I miss those things.
I think I will go out and buy a windows based pc tomorrow, just for old times sake.

(another shameful ploy to hopefully raise the value of my Apple stock)

Absolutely not....

But I think that after using TB for awhile, you'll probably swing those accounts into TB too. One thing to consider, if you install TB. When it asks if you want to import your OE stuff, say No. This will make a clean install with no user accounts at all. Just add only yourself into TB. This way YOU can use either email client (OE or TB). The others in your family can continue to use OE as they always have.

Here's an option for you. Setup TB (with only your account) to leave the mail 'on the server' when you get your mail with TB. This just copies the mail from the server at Comcast to TB. You can then go back to OE and get your mail again, this time it transfers the mail into OE, just like you've always done.
Your next question is "Why do that?" Easy, it gives you the chance to 'try' TB without having the mail in either TB or OE, depending on which program you run first. As you may have figured out by now, getting the mail with OE first leaves nothing for TB to download....so you would use TB first.

You can just forget the part above about leaving the mail on the server and grab your mail from either program. Some of it will be in your OE folder, some in your TB folder...your call.

TB and OE look so much alike, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. I think TB is safer from a security standpoint. As a tip, in either program, turn off HTML mail. Mails that came before with pictures 'imbedded' into the body of the email, will now come as attachments...no big deal really. But it is a big deal security wise. HTML mails are a vector for all kinds of nasty stuff imbedded in the HTML code of the email.

One more thing, in either program, instead of using port 110 for (POP) mail.comcast.net, use port 995. This uses a Secure Connection (SSL).
You would then use port 465 (SSL too) for smtp.comcast.net instead of the more commonly used port 25.

You really don't need to goto other hosting sites to 'filter' you emails, just turn on the filters you already have at Comcast (probably OFF by default) and you should be fine. I really can't remember the last time I got a spamming email.

One last option....create a folder under your inbox called 2BSorted. Then make an email filter to send all mails from people NOT in your address book to that folder. You can then do a quick glance in that folder to confirm the junk mail (if any). If you do find a mail in that folder that you want to keep, drag that mail to your regular inbox and add them to your address book. Go back and toast everything in the 2BSorted folder...

p.s. Now That's a mouth full !!! :D

Re: Spam control?

Trouble with TB and Firefox is their next for trouble when they get a little bigger, and the spammers have them in there sites. If you keep the updates with MS, I see no prob. Frankly, this computer in front of me is entertainment. Something pops, I toss it out the window, where this is a real life. Anyway, a simple separate email account will work Boom..Try Myway. Cost little time, zero money

Re: Spam control?

Howdy all,

I'm doing a similar thing. I'm using Linux for all my internet browsing and email. Same as the Mac....no virus's, spyware, and on Comcast, only an occasional spam message. I use Novell Evolution(Formerly Ximian Evolution) for my email program. I think most of my spam messages come from my friends sending me the unending jokes and leaving my address for everyone to see by using CC: instead of BCC:

If you'd like to try Linux but don't want to spend any money, You have a multitude of choices.

You can easily download the full version of the absolutely excellent Fedora Core 4... go here: http://fedora.redhat.com for more info and instructions.

The other much easier choice it to try one of the CD based versions such as Knoppix. With Knoppix you can try it without actually loading it on your computer. It runs completely from a CD and installs nothing permanently on your computer. go here: http://www.knoppix.org click the British/US flag for english instructions etc.

You will be downloading an ISO9660 image file (about 700MB you'll need cable!) that your CD burning software will install on a CD making it a "bootable" CD.

With the CD you simply put it in the drive and reboot the computer. When you want to go back to Winblows you just remove it from your CD drive and reboot....voila you're back running the Micro$oft virus!

With the MAC you're probably running Safari as your Browser (Unless you're using Firefox) Safari was developed by the KDE group http://www.kde.org They are the K Desktop Environment developers. (the second best desktop environment...second only to the MAC desktop I guess!!)

When using Linux if you don't like the K Desktop Environment you can also use the Gnome desktop and there are others.

With Linux you get a LOT of choices. I am using SuSE Linux 10.0 and the KDE desktop....I'm also using FireFox too. It also came with Mozilla, and of course Konqueror ( http://www.konqueror.org ) and 2 other browsers... I have KDE setup so it looks and feels just like Winders XP because my wife and kids use it.(we also have an XP Laptop and an XP desktop.) I use the Linux box 99% of the time.

btw you can also try Linux on your MAC too!

Don't go out and buy a windows box! Wait a little while and buy another MAC....it's gonna be INTEL x86 based pretty soon! (mid 2006 I think)

btw....I used to drive a MACk...is that the same thing? ;)

Cheers,

Rick
(the Linux geek!)
