Re: SparAlloy Ultraboard use?
The wood inside the fiberglass on both stringers & bulkheads add minimally to the structural integrity of the hull. The glass does the majority of the work, the wood is 'only' a form of sorts to shape the glass into a stronger 'U' shape. Replace the wood w/ uber expensive SparAlloy & you still need to glass over them.
As Bob mentioned:
Most engineered boards are too expensive for the job they do. People already spend thousands for restorations and the boats will last 25 years if care for properly. The engineered boards are probably better suited for a custom boat builder. What are you trying to restore?
Bob_VT, thanks for the reply. I am putting a floor in a bay boat and was looking at this. Found some locally.
I was thinking it could save me some time on glassing the stringers and bulkheads I have to replace.
Essentially, you'd be building the stringers out of man-made gold, and then
painting them w/ fiberglass resin & cloth. No cost savings, it'd just be EXTRA expensive. You might get a little more life out of the boat w/ SparAlloy stringers & bulkheads, but unless you do the transom & the deck out of something similar, they may need to be replaced again anyway. And are you & your family really going to have this boat in 15+yrs, because it's tough to recover the 'normal' costs of a boat resto, add extra expensive materials & it bec omes even tougher to recoup your costs. Esp in areas that can't be seen & touched by a potential buyer.
Welcome to dry dock, and sorry, Memorial Day weekend was kind of crickets @ the forum, it's boat weather don't ya know.....
Good luck w/ your project, start a thread & post some pix, there are plenty of people ready & willing to help the rest of us work on our projects....
