We've had safety equip. lists, first aid kits, PFD's, and many other suggestions on what should always be on the boat.

I just finished reading a response to a post that mentioned taking a specific spare part on the boat at all times made me think of this.

There are a lot of us shade-tree wannabe's out here that would benefit greatly from the knowledge of you seasoned, retired and paycheck mechanics & techs if you would kindly list for us the spare parts, hardware, literature & tools for both boat & motor that YOU MUST have on your boat before it leaves the dock for full day and into the dark boat trip.

Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. :D

Re: Spare Parts???

Not retired, but I can tell you what I carry.

I run a dual motor configuration (spare motor). Boat will do 25 knots fully loaded on one motor/38 Knots on two.

Following spare parts:

1 Prop + prop nut + thrust washer + several cotter pins (for locking nut)

Spare set of plugs for motor

extra key & kill switch lanyard

Spare microswitch for neutral start (had one break, couldn't start motor)

Pull cord for motor (if applicable)

Extra main fuse for outboard

Manual (unless you know built in safety features) ie: black box bypass limp home mode, cold wx starting system, trim tilt manual operation (Yamaha has those 3)

2 bottles of heet (water in fuel issues)
outboard starting fluid (has lubricant in it)

Fuel filter

For the boat:

Extra boat plug
Marine Tex (fix anything, even wet)
Duct tape

For steering (hydraulic)
Spare fluid

Tools:

6 in one stnlss screwdriver from West Marine (3/16, 1/4 flat, #2, #3 phillips + 2 useless sockets)
Adjustable wrench
Vise grip
Needlenose pliers
Elec tape
spare elec connectors (twist on/no tools needed)

Disclaimer: I do boat in Alaska, where there is generally no sea tow and the only CG you will see is a helicopter.

Re: Spare Parts???

This is one of those, it all depends kind of questions. The larger the boat and the farther you go, the more stuff you might want to take. On my 26ft boat w\260 mercruser I would carry, spare prop, complete ignition parts, complete line of belts and hoses. A fairly complete tool kit, including time light and dewell meter. Also an electrical kit, fuses wire, meter, solder iron(gas),connectors, breakers, light bulbs.Every year during haul out I replace that stuff, run new parts, put old parts in a box in bilge. For my small boats I use an old vidio camera case (they float). I carry, plugs, plug wrench, vice grip,a couple screw drivers, a couple cresent wrenches, hay wire, black tape or duck tape, sillycone. I also keep shear pins and starter rope taped to my motor or in the boat. Oars. Tie wraps.

Re: Spare Parts???

This is great! Good lists! Alcan your right this is one of those questions "It all depends". There is such a variety of boaters on this board but as you can see already there some common things that all carry.

All lists combined is like a master list and really makes you think of what might go wrong, we can pick -n- choose what would be right for our boat/motor pkg.

Hope we get a few more opinions. One thing I have now I never had on any boat are 3 motors, well sort of 3, I have the main, a kicker and a 55lb trolling motor. The trolling motor may not get me home but it might get me to help. I've had to row a 19' f/g boat before and I plan never to have to do that ever again. Of course the best laid plans... and thats what the extra parts are for.

For you guys with motor and elect troll motor how many batteries do you carry for serious all day fishing without dropping anchor?

Thanks guys
