Spare prop questions

Hey guys,

I just purchased a 14.5 x 19 Merc aluminum prop off of Craigslist. My stock prop is a 23 pitch, but for $70 I figure this will work great as a spare.

I'm planning on purchasing a spare prop nut and washer just in case I drop one in the lake, as well as a floating prop wrench. I'm pretty sure that the stock prop hub will work on the new prop, but is it worth buying a new one as a spare? Am I likely to damage the hub if I hit something with the prop?

Is there anything else I should buy to keep on the boat as a spare? Also, I noticed that the prop nut has a rubber part that prevents the nut from turning on its own. Do these wear out over time, or are they good forever?

Thanks everyone!

Re: Spare prop questions

I recommend carrying a spare hub kit, normally it has everthing you need including the nut (check it to make sure). The floating wrench is a good idea but don't forget to carry a 12" 2x4 to block the prop with so you can get the old nut off and put the new one on. Without it you'll need a third hand.

Great tip on the 2x4. That would have made my life a lot easier this passed summer.

Ayuh,.... Or put the drive in Reverse to remove the prop, 'n Forward to retighten it...

I'd also get All the pieces to mount the spare prop, as spares....

Okay, so exactly which hub kit will I need? There seems to be a lot of Flo-Torq hubs out there, and I have no idea which one to get!
