I have a 1979 Merc 20 thunderbolt and I think that I am having a sync issue. I pulled the carb on Friday because it would not run. Gave it a good cleaning and it started right up and idled perfectly. Great, problem solved? not so fast. Launched it Saturday morning-started right up, idled smothly. Put it in gear at idle-no problem. Went to accelerate and it died. Tried this over and over and it kept cutting out. It would idle in gear but that's it. On a hunch I jiggled the ignition advance lever arm and she took off like Secretariat. Upon restart, some of the time I had to repeat this procedure, while other times it worked like it is supposed to. Is there any adjustment that I can make here? Do I need to replace the linkage?
I read the link and sync in the FAQ section but this motor is rope start.
Thanks,
WM
