Spark check

Many of my questions have been answered on this site by reviewing current/past posts. I really appreciate it.
To check spark as an indicator of coil function, many have suggested removing the spark plug and grounding it. Is it not possible to check for spark by connecting an inductive timing light to the spark plug wire while running or by cranking over the engine? If there is no light coming from the unit, there should be no spark at the plug correct? If the plug itself is in question, then removal would be necessary. The reason I need to check for spark is at about 1800-2500 rpm I get a vibration. Smooth as silk at lower/higher rpm's. My concern is that a cylinder is not firing. I am only getting 4200 rpm at WOT. I also need to do a compression check and see exactly what type prop is on the motor.
Any and all comments welcomed.
1989 Force 125 M#1258W9B S#1188 on a Wellcraft 18 Sport CC.
Thanks for all your help.
Manzi

Re: Spark check

a compression check is your best bet see if that cyc.has compression. with engine running ground the spark plug wire see if motor speed changesif does not change problay that cyc..could be a bad plug or wire.might need a service manual my force 120 has differnt pressure for each cyc.mine has a vibration @lower rpm's i think its water pushing the prop cause motor is smooth if i just use the throttle i have 13/1/2 24 pitch prop with 2 holes.
