Sorry for the stupid question but I've seen Joe Reeves respond to some posts on this forum and he usually suggests checking compression and spark for most any problem. I would like to do this on my engine but I need some clarification on the spark check.

He says that the spark should jump a 7/16" gap and create a loud snap. How do I check for this? Do I pull the plug out and hold it with a pair of pliers while someone cranks the ignition? Do I use a flathead screwdriver to create the gap?

I have an inline spark checker, but I don't think it has a gap ajustment, I believe it just lights up. Also, I don't think I could listen for the snap with this device.

Re: Spark Check

Here's an easy way rboat.....

In my early days.....don't go there....I would take a large nail with the head cut off and stick it in the spark plug boot. I would guesstimate the distance from a good ground and have some one crank the engine. If it jumped and snapped....good spark. Just hold the spark plug wire with insulated pliers. Really a good jolt.

OBJ,

My wires are short, where is a good ground place to aim the nail?

Thanks, and sorry to hijack your topic rboat!

Re: Spark Check

Scrape a little paint off one of the bolts. Make it shiney. Works fer me.
