'80 evinrude E35elcsm I rebuilt the carb. cranked it over and it ran for total of 3 sec. and died. now all I get is an occasional light single backfire and a little smoke from the exhaust. checked the fuel pump and it seems fine, I can smell fuel from the carb area. I'm thinking this might possibly be a light spark issue. maybe timing?
thanks for your help.

Did you set the low speed needle correctly, about 1 1/4 turn out from lightly seated?

I used all new parts in the rebuild, I don't think the float is stuck. Do you think the symptoms match?

I did 1 1/4 turns, I may try a little higher, and a little lower to rule that out tomorrow.

I am really at a loss as to the next step.

Did it have the same problem before you rebuilt the carb, why did you rebuild the carb?

Re: spark issue maybe?

Recently bought the motor, and going through the paces to get it going. Replaced the relay/solenoid, cleaned and serviced the starter. That got me to the point of trying to start it. During the attempt it backfired once lightly and gas come out the carb bowl. So next step was rebuilding the carb, and wow! was is scary. This one little carb was very gummy, very worn parts. Someone had replaced the bottom gasket at some point but nothing else. I have not background on the motor and hope I can rejuvenate it back to running condition.

Was the float parallel with the carb body? More than once I put the float in upside down and didn't notice.

I am sure the float is correct, nice and parallel, and it's not flowing out the bowl like before.
It actually won't go upside, I tried to by accident.

In that case, how did you clean the carb? Overnight in a carb dunk, then blowing out every orifice with an air nozzle, then washed in hot soapy water , rinsed and blown out again?

Soaked it most of the evening while using many different tiny brass brushes to clean it. Blew things out with air and reassembled. I did not wash with soap and dry again.

Re: spark issue maybe?

Update, redid most of the tests on carb, fuel supply, fuel pump, tried different adjustments on the slow idle speed knob. Did a compression test, with the results being top 80, bottom 90. They held firm at that. So out of curiosity I tried to give it a little throttle during a start attempt and it started. Let off and it stalled. So little unsure what's the next step. The book shows throttle cam adjustments and throttle control rod adjustments. I surely can check both of these, but is there anything else going on here that I should check.
Thanks

Once you get the lynk & synk set, you will probably have to go back and reset the low speed needle to get the proper idle.

I am trying to not sound too dumb, but link and sync seems to apply to motors with more then one carb. I am going to do both of the throttle adjustments and see what I get. When I get it to run I'll reset the low speed needle. Thanks.

Re: spark issue maybe?

I did the two throttle adjustments(cam and control rod) no change in starting. So while fiddling, I discovered this, the idle adjustment screw on the throttle is bent pretty bad anyone no where to find a new one? Is this my problem or just another thing along the path.

Re: spark issue maybe?

Well, that is the idle adjustment on you engine, maybe you need to replace the screw and set the idle up a little so you can make sure the carb is adjusted properly and then reset the idle to the proper speed. #84 below.

OK so I managed to get the screw out and straighten it, (surprisingly soft metal.) And now can adjust it and it will run set up to the throttle cam adjustment mark but I don't think this is where it's supposed to be permanently set to is it? the books aren't very descriptive on the setting's.

Re: spark issue maybe?

If you have all the linkage and the low speed needle set for the best idle in gear, the screw is to set the idle RPM, set it to get the proper RPM and leave it there.
