Hello, I have a 74 25hp Johnson that I have been working on for a while, one of my latest replacements was a coil (it was cracked in 2 spots). Well when you get a new coil you have to put it together yourself (wire to the boot to the coil)something is wrong because I get shocked when I touch the boot  . Do I need to put some sort of seal around the where the wire meets the boot and the wire meets the coil. When I ground one end of a tester to the motor and touch the boot it will ground out. I cant adjust the slow speed idle until I get this fixed any ideas
Thanks,
Jay

Re: Spark leak

Hello,
I have a '74 70hp Johnson and replaced all three of the coils which came with wires and boots. The boots and wires are junk, take them off and throw them away now. I bought 3 boots from NAPA and some copper core wire from a boat shop (under five bucks total) and no more spark leaks, boat never ran better.

Also a dab of some Dielectric grease doesn't hurt to keep the moisture out. Put it on the coil side of the wire and the boot side, you can buy it at any carparts store.

Hi shooter26,
GT150 gave you some good advice. I've done the same thing several times. Go to the auto parts store and buy what's needed to make up a set of plug wires. While you are at it, buy a tube of electrical insulating grease. Put a good coat of it on each end of your new plug wires. This will help seal the wires and prevent corrosion.

Re: Spark leak

GT150,

I have a 1977 75hp Evinrude. I just replaced all three ignition coils. My problem is that spark is jumping from the boot to the metal portion of the spark plug. I'm thinking the coils, which came with the wires and boots were from Napa also. Since the spark won't stay at the gap I have cylinders that drop, poor acceleration, and I don't have the top end speed I used to. Did you have similar problems?
