I have a 1975 Evinrude 135 has a miss fire in number 3 cylinder sometimes it will hit on all cyclinders then other times it just spits and sputters would this be caused by a bad stator or the timer base??? I have swapped out the coil on number 3 cylinder and it does the same thing so I know its not the coil any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Spark plug maybe. One thing I've learned from trucks and sleds is you can't trust plugs they can do funny things even from brand new. It's one of the cheapest things to start with

Honestly if the power pack is older, I would look there. They can be difficult to troubleshoot with out a DVA meter or DVA adapter for a standard digital meter. I have seen them go completely out, then I had one that was ridiculously intermittent, and actually advanced and retarded the timing randomly. If you download a service manual there are some resistance checks you can do, but to thoroughly prove it out as with the rest of the ignition system, I found it best to have a DVA. CDI electronics sells one that for me worked well. However, if the powerpack(s) is(are), older, in my opinion, it's a good idea to replace it(them). The older electronics will fail, usually at the most inconvenient time.

Hi There
Just went through this with my Evinrude 115 1975. I had no spark at all
The info on this forum had me start at the plugs and work my way back through the system,
to where \i found that my stator was shot. I had a DVI test done it and confirmed that it was
bad. I replaced it and I am back up and running again.
