I know this might be a stupid question..but I am a novice boater. I would like to tune up my 5.7 mercruiser by changing plugs, rotor cap and wires. Now here it goes...is there any difference in using car tune up parts verse marine tune up parts? I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I'm just trying to save a buck. Thanks

Re: Spark Plug comparison

You'll probably be okay with parts such as these, however NEVER use an automobile starter or alternator for a marine application (google boat fires)

Re: Spark Plug comparison

Is there a huge difference in product (auto vs. marine) when it comes to spark plugs and wires then. Will I achieve the same performance with one than the other. Thanks for your advise.

I would try to get SS plugs if you can. For the added protection against a plug getting rusted in place, I think it's money well spent. You can often get SS at the auto store though.

the only differance i would think in plugs may be heat range.
I would assume a marine engine may have different heat properties than an automotive engine.

Wannabe, Buy the correct plugs for your Mercruiser at an auto parts store. The price differential to automotive will be insignificant.d:) The cap and rotor may be unique to the Mercruiser, since they use a different ignition system than the automobile industry. :| The wires may not matter.
