Hey all-
The last time we took our boat out it had troubles starting.
I believe it's the spark plugs.

Are they easy to change?
Can anyone help??

Thank you,

Destinee

Re: Spark Plug Help!!!! Please

Why do you think it's the spark plugs? What engine is on your boat? Look for the model number near the transom mount on your engine and give that to us.

What problem are you having with the outboard? Does it not start? Does it run rough? Does it lack power?

The more information you provide, the better the folks here will be able to help. Lets start with the model of the engine, and the nature of the problem. That's a start.

Easy with a spark plug wrench or deep socket. The important thing is to get the right plug, so use this chart: http://www.boatsetup.com/SparkPlugChart.pdf

Tighten a new plug finger tight, then about a 1/3 to 1/2 turn should be snug enough. If you over-tighten, you will strip the threads in the aluminum heads.

Re: Spark Plug Help!!!! Please

Sorry Guys-

I realize the engine make and model would've helped

Evinrude E-Tec 225hp.

It took a while to start and once we got it started it ran great!

My hubby thought it was the spark plugs and when he called a marine shop, they also said it's known to happen more often in those motors.

By the way, is there a way that I can get all of your replies in my e-mail?

Thanks for all the quick reply's guys!!

Re: Spark Plug Help!!!! Please

I don't think there's an email option on this board.

Changing plugs on that engine is pretty much the same as changing plugs on a car. Take the cowling off the engine, locate the plugs, use a spark plug wrench to remove them after removing the wire's cap from the plug. (I suggest doing them one at a time). Check the gap on the new, proper numbered plug with a proper spark plug gap guage (I don't know the gap on that engine), then screw the plug in finger tight. Tighten the plug properly with the spark plug wrench (I don't know the proper torque on that engine...check with the dealer). Repeat until all plugs are replaced. Put the cowling back on and try the outboard in the water or on muffs.

That said, if you or your husband have no experience at all with spark plug replacement and are all thumbs, consider having the outboard tuned up at the shop. It's spendy, but you'll certainly get the job done right.

I no expert on the E-Tech but sounds more like fuel to me. After not being use it took a little while to get the fuel pump up to all the injectors and this is normal after not being used for a long time.
