hi I have a 1999 evinrude 115 ficht engine that I just bought. it is running fine and starts right up ,but today I changed spark plugs and the old ones had a lot of dry black soot on them. I put the four new ones in and ran it for about 10 minutes and checked them and they too were covered in black soot. not sure if is normal or if there is an issue. my last outboards plugs would be alittle "wet" and it lasted for 10 years. what do you guys think? thanks

I did compression test 120 to 122 or so on all four cylinders. runs fine ,maybe alittle "sniff" or two when I first start it but other then that alls good. oil does run out of the engine when I tilt it up not sure if that's normal.

Personally, I think you are worrying over nothing. So, isn't a ficht supposed to run drier? Isn't that the whole purpose, less oil and crap going through the engine and out into the water?

Did you index the plugs when you installed the new ones?

Getting the open end of the spark plug facing the fuel injector with the proper torque on the plug.

yes I did index ,12 oclock to 3 oclock on starboard and 12 oclock to 9 oclock port. the old plugs had indext marker on them also. I'm using autolite plug 985. guy at marina said they are the plugs to use,but I cant find anything online about if they are. I have my engine book on the way so may be i'll stop asking all the dumb questions lol.. thanks again guys

DI oil is Evinrude XD-50 or the fully synthetic XD-100 oil

Black sooty plugs are normal after some low speed running in an old FICHT. They clean off after high speed running for a while.

I think you're right. I only had it a idle and maybe a few rpm 's over that ,so after I drop her in the water and open her up alittle i'll take them out and see how they look. thank again guys ~matt~

come to find out what I read online was wrong. I got my book today and it says to index starboard from 12 to 9 and port side 12 to three. also I have wrong plugs. this engine is not "pinned" so I need to use champion 7712 plugs. going to put those in and reindex plugs and see how it works out .thanks again
