spark plug wire popping off

1984 40HP Evinrude. Strange problem. Twice in the last three times out I've suddenly dropped to one cylinder and when I opened the cover I found that a spark plug wire popped off a spark plug. Top cylinder first time, bottom today. Reconnect and all is well. What could be causing this?

Replace it. It's that simple. While you are at it, replace the other one as well before it does the same.
Not bad after 16 years eh ???

Are you snagging the plug wire with the hood latch?

No. Each wire has done it once while the motor was running. Actually, the first time it happened both boots on either end of the wire were off. Otherwise the motor has run flawless for me since I bought it about 7 years ago. This happened today and about 10 days ago.

Are you snagging the plug wire with the hood latch?

That's very odd. Try squeezing them tighter, or if you have to replace the end of it. They're cheap and easy to do.

Thanks guys. I was on the water for about 6 hours today with no problems. I'll replace the wires.

Hmmmmm, never had that happen before. I usually give the boots a slight twist back and forth when I put them on, so they wouldn't just pop off.
