I have a 98' force 120. I just purchased the boat last summer. When I first got the boat I had all kinds of trouble starting the motor initially and once started it would fire right up the rest of the day. Then found that the spark plugs were getting gummed up. So now before going out on the water i will pull the plugs out and wipe them off and the boat runs fine for the most part and will start up in less than a minute. I'm just wondering what could be causing the plugs to get so gummed up every time? I have to mix the oil and the motor shows 50:1 for the ratio. I've been putting in the recommended amount of oil per gas. Could it be that the sparks plugs are not the correct ones or just need to be replaced?

thanks.

new plugs are always good insurance; get two sets and keep one on board

Fouling is the name of the game with those surface gap plugs--especially if you idle or troll a lot. A green scrubee pad cleans them quite nicely but I also always keep at least one clean set on board.

Re: spark plugs

Thanks Glennrow & Frank.

I had one other question related to spark plugs. The plugs that came in my engine were "champion" spark plugs. After looking on the internet, it appears that the plugs should be NGK BUZHW. Is there any difference other than the price which seems to be much higher for the NGKBUZHW. this might be my issue as to why they are gumming up????

different plug companies make comp. plugs. if your usually going at slow speeds your plugs are gonna gum up. you may want to ask your parts counter is there is a "hotter burning plug" avail for your motor. as for champion vs. ngk - its much like ford vs. chevy, everyone has there own opinion. plugs are not that expensive, experiment for yourself and find out what works best for your application.

Re: spark plugs

For plugs, that type of plug you posted is expensive for one plug. I just bought 5 and it came to $90 with tax and they are few and far between where I come from. I can't even get the right champion plug for it here in Canada.
