My Johnson V4 (85 hp, model 85ESL75) outboard sounded like it was missing and lost power so my buddy and I did the only thing we knew how to do, change the spark plugs. Now its running great but I still don't know if these plugs are right because... the manual I have quotes a champion # L77J4 but all I could find was L77JC4 and the manual doesn't say what the gap should be.

Does anyone know if these plugs are OK?
Do they come pre-gapped?
What is the gap supposed to be?

Thanks in advance.

Re: spark plugs

wreck rider
The Johnson chart shows:

L77JC4 or QL77JC4(Resistor) Plug gapped @ .030 They are not pre-gapped. You need to make sure it is correct. I would use the QL77JC4 plug, as it is a resistor plug that will cut down on interference through your boat radio and other electronics you may have.

Re: spark plugs

Is it OK to use the L77JC4 instead of the Q . . .

I think I had the Q-version in my motor, but I was in a bind a few weeks back and needed new plugs right away and I could only find the L77JC4 at the store - they didn't have the Q-version.

Can I keep using these or how will it harm my motor?

Re: spark plugs

the original gap recommended for L77J4 installed on your motor was .040 .

Re: spark plugs

Thank you, 2K Boat....It was also an OMC service bulliten.
Hey guys, the only thing the Q means is resister for non-interferance with things like radios, depthfinders......absolutely no reason to worry, using either plug......... :)
