I have a 87 Bayliner with an 3.0 OMC I/O. I have changed the coil 3 times :mad:and still it keeps on burning out the coil. I have gone as far as to disconect the whole harness and run battery power thru a resistor to the coil then fron the coil thru a resistor to the distribitor. Runs great for about 20 minutes then I try to idle it up a little, maybe about 1500 rpm and within a few minutes the coil go out again. Do any of you out therehave a clue on what is wrong?
Is there a electric ignition I can change over to?
I really need some help here................

Re: Spark problem

Have you tried letting it sit after it dies to see if the problem may be heat?

Yes they do make a conversion. I just ordered the pertronix ignitor II electronic conversion and flamethrower coil for my 2.5l. I would not get the ignitor original because if you leave the key on it will kill the unit.

Re: Spark problem

I have waited for it to cool down but still no spark. Go to the parts store and buy another coil and same thing happens. Coolant is running at 180 deg.

Re: Spark problem

It may be a tach problem. Disconnect the grey wire from the negative side of the coil and see if that helps.

One other thing. Automotive coils are not for marine use.
