1972 johnson V4 100hp 100ESL72R
I am having an erratic ignition problem. Earlier this year I replaced a dead pulse pack with a new one fron Sielers. I installed it according to the
instructions. All the wires are hooked up correctly and I discarded the clipper.I installed a new ignition coil. I removed the flywheel and inspected the distributor, sensor, and wires. It all looks good. My first trip to the lake the engine ran strong and smooth with no problems.
The next trip to the lake it was hard to start. The engine stumbles, won't rev, won't stay running unless I push the start throttle full, can't even get it into gear without it stalling. I put in new plugs, same thing. With the new plugs removed and grounded to the block and hooked to the high tension leads the spark is erratic while cranking with the starter. I pulled the flywheel again to inspect again, all looks good. I even put the old coil back on with no change. What should I check next?

You say it won't stay running unless you push the "start throttle" full. Are you calling the choke the start throttle? If so, you're having a fuel problem, not ignition.

c/6
Hooty

That problem sounds similar to ours once. By the start throttle, do you mean the warm up lever(timing advance)? If so, i would check the power pack, that was our problem. Good luck.

Check the anti-reverse spring to see that it's not badly worn, or broken.
