The boat won't restart when hot and runs a little chuncky at an idle. I am unable to duplicate problem on the muffs. Compression is good (125 psi) all cylinders. Rebuilt carbs and changed plugs. I brought it to a shop and they told me I need a power pack. They said that if I am changing the power pack I should change the timerbase and stator also. If the timerbase or stator is bad it could wipe out the new power pack. To me it sounds like they are just wanting to throw every electrical compontent at this thing. They want $1300 to repair this. Does this sound right?

Agreed, do it yourself. You can buy a manual and ALL of those parts and do it yourself for half the price. I'm not saying all those parts are bad, do as Tasha said to narrow down the issue, just saying it to make the point.

+1 DIY.

Even if you decide not to, don't go back to that bunch of parts changers masquerading as mechanics. "If the timerbase or stator is bad..." is not something you should hear. Either they're bad or they're not, and if those guys don't have the test equipment to find out, go someplace else.

They are correct with their diagnosis but 1300 bucks sounds a little steep. The powerpacks and stator are all on the same circuit and do affect one another so it is better to replace all but again I wouldn't pay that much.

Let us know how it turns out. The manual should also cover how to test each part, so before throwing money into unneccessary parts, test them out if you can.

So I replaced the timer base, stator, and power pack and she runs like a champ. I spent $500 dollars on parts and the repair shop wacked me $125 for "diag". Alot better than the $1300 they wanted. I can't see how they were going to charge me 5 hours labor when it took me 2 hours start to finish and I have never done this before. Oh well lesson learned . Thanks again for all your help . I do have one more question, When I went to the parts store to get spark plugs they did not have the champions in stock so they crossed it to a NGK plug. Could this lead to problems?

Depends on who you ask, but the answer is usually just go to a marine store and get the correct Champion plugs. Personally, I would just go get the Champion plugs as well, have heard to many "supposed horry stories" of NGK's gone wrong.
Oh, and glad you got it fixed for a fraction of their price. I have noticed (not just in the marine field) that shops will grossly overprice you on their labor just to get money. Too long of a story, but I've come across it within the past 2 months.
