Re: Spark test terminology

Static = remove a plug, and either using a spark tester or a spark plug that has the gap opened to 3/8 inch or so, with the test plug connected and grounded, crank the engine and check spark quality. It should have a crisp blue snap. Yellow or weak spark indicates an ignition problem.

Dynamic = with engine running, pull one spark plug wire at a time using an insulated pliers, wooden clothes pin or similar tool. If the engine sound and running quality changes when the wire is pulled, that plug is working ok. If it doesn't slow down or change running quality, that cylinder is dead (either no spark, weak spark, or low/no compression).

Re: Spark test terminology

I think what Walker might have been referring to was to do a spark check in the driveway after doing a compression test. Then when it acts up, do another spark test. The difference being mostly the temp. Sometimes ignition components will fail when heated up.

EDIT: You beat me to it Up and your definition is much more accurate than mine.
