does anyone ever check to verify spark to all cylinders or is the only failure ever, bad gas ao a carb adjust. Out boards, mostly point fired, are notorious for POINT fouling and need a tune up more than a carb job!

i must be " missing" your "point".? and just to add some "fuel" to the "fire", my basic trouble shooting usually starts with a compression test, then ignition, then fuel. but of course, thats just the way i do it.
compression tester, spark tester and spray bottle with a little premix. will locate 90% of the problems. If it runs great till its hot then its probably ignition, If it runs great at high or low speed but not at both its probably fuel/carbs.
A person i work with spent hundreds before he brought me the boat to look at. "Motor still didn't like to start and refused to run at tick over". No one thought to ask him if he knew how to start a outboard before they started to recommending rebuilding and replacing parts.
Its just rules of thumb until you ask the right questions and get a response that makes sense.
